After doing a group web essay about the killer Chigurh who is calculated, fair, guided by fate, and has principles and standards, I am left wondering: Who the hell is Chigurh? I am more perplexed by him after studying his character than I was before. He is a machine without any emotion, yet he executes fair play and sticks to his words. At one point, it even seems that a bit of emotion comes over his face. Every action he takes looks like it would take me about three years to plan out, yet he does it as if it takes no thought whatsoever. Is he a machine? Is he human? Is he the embodiment of death? Is he the courier of fate? I don't know, but here's to you, Chigurh, and your perplexing ways.

I think that Chigurh, at first glance, appeared to be the most complex character that we examined this semester. The Watchmen had many interesting characters, but I feel that Chigurh was his own character while Rorschach, The Comedian, and others in Watchmen kind of played off and developed each other as characters.

Then when you start to examine the conversations Chigurh has with his "victims" and you start to peel away layers of the onion, another very different character emerges. By his own admission, Chigurh is "the right tool." He's the guy you send when you need the job done. He's the guy that fate guides to your doorstep. He's the hitman on a mission.

Therefore, in the end, I think McCarthy attempted to engage readers in contemplating Chigurh's role and interpreting his actions... but in the end, Chigurh is just a tool: sent to do a job and used until the job is done.

After discussing the book in depth, I realized that Chigurh is so much more complex than I had given him credit for. I thought he was just a ruthless robotic assassin who was driven by a code. The discussion about the conversation between Chigurh and Wells where he reveals that he has been changed by his injury revealed new information about his character. I did not even realize how he had changed his methods after that point in the story. I think he began to realize that fate and luck might not work out the way he intended it to. He never dreamt that someone would be able to hurt him if he did not allow them to. This shows how arrogant his character had been up until this point. Now he seems to recognize that he is merely the coin tosser and has no say in peoples' fates or his own.
