response to "hills like white elephants"

"Hill like White Elephants" was confusing to me for as short and seemingly basic as it was.  The writer described in a first person mode, a simple lifestyle in which the only care was drinking.  The "operation" that was referred to throughout as "it" is never really described.  The focus appears to be more on the motives for trying "it" and second guessing themselves about the consequences and how "life will be afterwards."  Another point to consider is the reason for doing "it" was not for personal gain, but for someone else. This person seemed to lack self-respect by saying, "I don't care about me" and the incentive for doing "it" was for the other to love the speaker more.  The main connection I found between this piece and the "Cathedral" was the emphasis on following one's first thoughts and intuition.  I will explain this in my thoughts on that piece.
