English 102 Policies and Course Information
Office hours will be held Tuesday 1-2 and Wednesday 1-2. My office is in Greenlaw Hall, room 533. (I’m sometimes in room 314.) My office phone is 962-8480. I can be reached by e-mail at iamdan@unc.edu. My cell is 740-8559.
Most of the course information and activities will play out at http://teachmix.com/compaction. Consult the site regularly for important tasks and to participate.
Assignments
There will be four major components to the course:
- A written essay about a place
- A Web essay about literature and film
- A panel presentation
- A research essay
There will also be a few developmental assignments during the term that will be required to receive full credit for the course.
And there will be opportunities to earn participation points using the class Web site.
Participation
A good deal of activity will take place through our class blog. You will be required to use the blog to exchange ideas, review one another’s work, etc. You will earn points for this participation using the following scheme.
- A blog posting—post about class topics and projects: 1 point
- Any comment: 1 point
- A reading response—you must have done the reading; identify a detail to demonstrate that you have done the reading, then discuss the detail or pose a question: 3 points
- A review of a classmate’s essay or Web essay—read the piece carefully and offer constructive feedback: 5 points
Based on your activities and points, you will be given a participation letter grade.
Attendance
Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each session. Late arrivals may be prevented from adding their name to the daily attendance roster. If you miss more than two class periods, you will not be eligible to receive an A in the course and your grade may be lowered based on the number of absences you have.
Grading
Your final grade will determined using the average of your participation grade and your four project grades (five grades total, averaged into a final grade). You must also complete all aspects of the course to receive full credit. Grades may be lowered for poor in-class participation, attendance, or failure to complete supplemental assignments.
Policies
Computer Use Policy: You will be asked to use computers in and out of class to conduct activities in this course. You must allow time and seek assistance for any technical issues that arise when completing computer-based activities (information and technical assistance are available at http://help.unc.edu or 962-HELP). You should also be aware that electronic class activities can be public in nature. The work that you conduct may reside on computer networks and may be viewed by an unknown audience. I will ask you to sign a permission form indicating that your work may be shared electronically or used for publishing and research. Students must also observe appropriate behavior during all computer-based activities related to this class. Students must act with respect and responsibility. Engaging in activities deemed to be offensive or inappropriate will be considered violations of the UNC Honor Code.
Plagiarism and Originality: Any student found plagiarizing work in this course will be considered in violation of the UNC Honor Code.
