Second Media Page Assignment--Photography and Art
This assignment, like the last, will result in a media page that addresses a topic related to the visual arts. The default approach will be to explore topics along two lines--1.) amateur production of art and 2.) defining visual artistry. You can, of course, develop an alternative topic--a profile of an artist, an exploration of an event, theme, or cultural concern, etc. The only fixed parameter is the requirement of participating in and developing the project with the help of flickr activities. Note that you can use your own images or you can use materials you find on flickr.
Here are the steps:
go to the flickr Web site. If you do not have a flickr account, create one. Once you have created an account go to the amalgamnation group on flickr and join the group. You can now share your own photos with the group or perhaps participate in other activities.
Next, browse through flickr images with an eye toward exploring questions related to amateurs in photographic art and definitions of photographic artistry. Identify an image that sparks some insight in terms of the topic, and then select the Gallery icon above the image. (Note some images might not have this option.) First Create a New Gallery--a collection space related to your project--and then add the image to the gallery. Once you have added the image, you can work on a description of it in the gallery. Collect more images and describe them. Also use the Note function to "read" sections of the image and add annotations. When you have a gallery well fleshed out with at least five images, you can create a link to it as a blog posting on the class Web site. Complete this task by Monday the 12th.
You can post a link to your gallery earlier and you can also explore the galleries of some of your classmates, offering comments on their images and the perspectives they are developing related to the topic.
Once you have completed the gallery assignment, identify about four images that you would like to discuss in more detail in your media page. Next, contact the owner of the image and ask for permission to reproduce it--with credit given--in your media page project. Explain that you will be analyzing the image for a scholarly project on art and photography. If you cannot get permission, you can look for an alternative image.
Finally, compose your media page. Refine your angle on the topic. Embed images that you have gotten permission to use into the page--with attribution and links. (For images that you wish to analyzed carefully, you can manipulate the image--crop, zoom, etc.--or create an annotated version using a photo editor. Add your your explanations, links to other relevant media or information, etc. You can create an audio essay or video slide show with narration to embed in the page, but it is not a requirement at this time.
Post the completed media page to the class Web site by Monday Oct. 19th.
