If your argument for why
If your argument for why newspaper will stay important is that it is something physical that you can hold and interact with (i.e. do the crossword puzzle) then the tablet will definitely replace it, because, supposedly, it too will be something physical that a user can interact with, only to a much greater degree. Recently my brother got a kindle, and I don't really like it, and would much rather have the book in my hands. But, at the same time, I can see its worth. Maybe the newspaper won't become obsolete in 10 years, who knows? With the way technology is evolving, maybe the tablet will be obsolete in 10 years. Look at things that seemed state of the art 10 years ago. In 1997 I got my first portable CD player, and now look where we are! It is madness.
Yeah, I know that it wouldn't
Yeah, I know that it wouldn't take the physical interaction out of the experience, but there's a big difference to me between reading print in that kind of format and holding the actual paper in my hands. I feel like people have a lot of little rituals associated with reading the newspaper, and interacting with the tablet wouldn't be able to replace that.
Also, the author makes the argument that the tablet and other new technologies will replace traditional journalism the way television replaced radio. However, i don't think that television did completely replace radio. NPR and talk radio still have an important value as sources of news entertainment. Obviously, these new technologies marginalize the old ones to some extent, but i don't think they can completely erase them.
I definitely don't agree with
I definitely don't agree with the author's assumption that in 10 years a print newspaper will be "quaint" and completely obsolete. I just feel like there's a certain appeal to sitting down with your newspaper while you eat breakfast or physically doing the crossword that isn't going to be replaced. I definitely think the internet has changed the way we receive news, but that doesn't mean that we have to completely eliminate the old sources.
