For my film essay I focused on Hitchcock. I looked at the similarities and differences in his films North By Northwest and Psycho. It was interesting to see how all of his films, while very different, contain his trademark filmmaking techniques and styles. They also share many common themes, even if their plots are very different. I really enjoyed watching both North By Northwest and Psycho and it was neat to see what two seemingly different films had in common when I explored deeper.

My video collage is about how soccer, or football as it is called around the world, brings people together. Players and spectators share a passion for this beautifully simple game. Many Americans, however, have never experienced the love for "the beautiful game" that is so popular in the rest of the world. My video is meant to relay the passion, creativity, and sense of unification with the rest of humanity that the game brings to every life it touches.

If you look at the eyes and body language of the great players you will see the intense emotion that soccer can bring out. But what truly makes the sport so amazing is its universal ability to bring joy to so many people, from the beaches of Brazil to the streets of France, to a dusty makeshift field in Africa.

Here is my Portfolio:

Playlist
My Playlist examines the process of striving towards a goal. I really enjoyed this assignment and it reminded me how meaningful music is in my life. I also learned that songs and their lyrics not only hold meaning individually, but can be linked and grouped to create a larger meaning. My Playlist not only happens to be composed of songs that I really like to listen to, but they all have lyrics that are very powerful to me. The message that my Playlist relays is one that is very important in my life and I think can apply to everyone in a different way.

Hope In America:

The two videos that I found were among the very few serious ones on the YouTube website. I think that a lot of the amateur videos online, although many are very funny and amusing, are perfect examples of the problems in American culture. Not only are the majority of the videos extremely stupid, but they show how much time people are wasting doing silly things. Not only that, but a lot of the videos contain humerous references to violence or sexual exploitation. I am not saying that I didn't find some of these videos entertaining, but the two videos I chose to write about are examples that even while terrible things are going on in the world, there is still hope. And... someone is still thinking about serious and important issues!

One of the most important film making techniques is the camera angle. Because film is a two-dimentional representation, the viewer is limited in what he/she is able to see in any given scene. The director's skill in using various camera angles can have a great impact on the viewer's impression of a scene. When setting camera shots and deciding what camera movement is necessary for a scene, there are several aspects to keep in mind:

1. Field of View- a long shot or close-up are used in different scenarios depending on the purpose of the shot
2. Transitions- each film is constructed from a sequence of shots that must be joined together through transitions

Here is the link to my photoessay on obesity in the U.S.

Obesity in the U.S.

It actually took me a lot longer to finish than I had expected. It was very interesting to read some of the statistics on obesity and it ended up being hard to choose what to include and what I had to leave out to keep it down to about 8 photos.

i am a little behind since i've been away for a few weeks. i would really appreciate it if someone could post a quick summary of what we are supposed to have done and by what date. i know dan posted several assignments and their descriptions on his blog but i just want to make sure i've got it all straight. i can figure out what to do for the assignments but it would be really helpful if someone could just make a short list so i can see how far behind i actually am. thanks so much!

i haven't done much for the photoessay yet besides link all of my 8 pages together. i decided to put mine together in just a plain microsoft word document because that is much easier for me. so i pasted all the pictures in there and i'm planning exactly what to write about each of them. then, when that's finished i am going to put it all onto the website at one time. so i'll have mine up in a couple days.

also, does anyone happen to remember the name of the article database we used in class to search that one day?

i think that learning how to make this photo essay is really interesting. at first i was a little bit frustrated, but now that i see how it all fits together it's really cool. i like how all the projects we do have 2 components: not only do we have to design our project and think about the meaning of things and how it will look, but we have to figure out the technology. the technology part is the most challenging for me but i think these are good skills to learn.

i am still considering different angles i can take with my topic of obesity. some of my ideas are:

-looking at obestity and children
-comparing obesity in the u.s. to other countries
-examining who is to blame for the obesity problem. is it parents? the media? the fast food industry?
-looking at if we are exhaggerating the problem or is it really as serious as it is being made out to be
-why has obesity increased over the years? what are the causes of this increase?

these are just some of my thoughts. a lot of what i decide to do will depend on the pictures i find because there is go

I thought that the article on body image was really interesting. As a female athlete, I see SOOO many of my friends and teammates with serious eating disorders and body image problems. There seems to be a general obession among teenage girls about weight and appearance.

We just started lifting weights during the off-season and many of my teammates (myself included) are worried about looking "manly" (basically meaning strong and powerful). I like to think that I am unaffected by the stereotypical image of a "beautiful" woman, but unfortunately I am just as guilty of buying into the stereotypes as many women are.

it was interesting today when we all compared notes on our playlist to see how everyone kind of took the assignment in their own direction. people's ideas and topics were all really good and some of them never would have even crossed my mind.

My Playlist

My playlist tells the story of taking a risk to strive to achieve a dream. I really focused on the process of achieving something important, rather than the achievement itself. The songs I chose depict this process mainly through emoitons.

  1. Bigger Than My Body- John Mayer

    Bigger Than My Body

“Someday I’ll fly/ Someday I’ll soar/ Someday I’ll be so damn much more/ Cause I’m bigger than my body gives me credit for”

when i try to use certain HTML tags i can't get them to work. for example, i tried to make the song titles bold and for some reason i couldn't do it. also, i am having trouble with the links to my songs. if someone could post something reviewing how to make the links to the songs i would really appreciate it. thanks!
