Hamlet

We were discussing how much Hamlet has saturated our literature in class, and it occurred to me that Hamlet has also created a kind of character "shorthand." We can to attribute a whole slew of emotions/personalities to a character simply by referencing or echoing any theme from Hamlet. Calling someone an "Ophelia," or using storyline containing a Hamlet-esque overthinking young man can add depth to a story where there previously was none.

Though there are much, much better examples of this shorthand, this video from New York Magazine online uses the Ophelia solidified in our collective social milieus in order to create a humorous sketch without any backstory. I KNOW this is a perpetuation of a stereotype--but it is funny and in good humor! I love ridiculous "what if?" fake scenarios about things so embedded in our culture.
