Problem
Not only human lives are affected by acid rain. Acid rain causes many health
problems in plants and animals as well. The acid eats away the protective layers
of the leaves, causing the plant to loose its way of protecting its self from
disease. Many lakes are sensitive to acid rain because they can not neutralize
it. Thus, the lakes become acidic and will not support fish. Acid rain can
destroy whole ecosystems after several contaminated rains. "Acid precipitation
has killed fish and other aquatic life outright. In Scandinavia, acid
precipitation has destroyed fish life in 5,000 lakes in southwestern Sweden and
in 1,500 lakes and seven Atlantic salmon rivers in southern Norway."(qtd. in
Boyle 14) As with human the intake of acid rain into the lungs and bronichials is
very harmful to animals. Acid rain may also increase heavy metals in some fish
which could impact human health.
