DEFENDING AFFIRMATIVE ACTION

Affirmative action was implemented with the idea and hope that America would finally become truly equal. But, even though affirmative action may be viewed as discriminatory and it is not a perfect solution to the problem of discrimination, it is all we have right now. It is better to find solutions that partially address the problem than to come up with no solution at all. People need to realize that thirty years of affirmative action is not long enough to solve a major societal problem. Affirmative action is making steady strides in ameliorating the problem of racial inequality in America. Affirmative action is something to be supported, until better and more effective plans are proposed.

POSITIVE ASPECTS
With the affirmative action policies implemented:

Students who came from a lower quality secondary school will have a chance to prove their worth in a good college.
The admission process can take into account the effects of standardized tests, which can be detrimental to minorities.

NEGATIVE ASPECTS
Many believe that an affirmative action admission policy unjustly favors a certain group of people.
There are people who feel that racial tension causes controversy.
