Bringing Back the 80s

Like the song "Right Round" by Flo Rida? Or the song "S.O.S - Rescue Me" by Rihanna? Or even the song "Get the Party Started" by Pink? Well have you noticed that they all share a common aspect in their music relating back to the 80s? Probably not because 80s music is not commonly heard amongst us nor is it really a part of mainstream music. Well be surprised to hear that mainstream music has indeed incorporated 80s new wave synthpop beat into current pop music songs. Hope you enjoy :)

I like the focused angle that kicks off the podcast. Would some more samples earlier in the podcast help pull listeners in? I like the juxtaposition of the eurythmics and pink samples. I wonder a bit about your commentary on the borrowing. Before moving on the Rhianna, can you discuss the pink borrowing. What makes it successful? What does it tell us about originality or cultural allusions? etc.  You will want to extend any discussion that delivers examples of 80s borrowing with commentary about its significance. How is the 80s borrowing different from other sampling? I think the new wave angle gets you started with a way of answering that question. And that comes back in around 4 minutes into the podcasts, especially toward the end. If you can weave it into the analysis of the songs as you go it will give you more analysis and commentary to support that angle that comes up right at the end.

Really cool idea. I knew about "Right Round" but it was really cool how you showed many examples of sampling are used in todays music

Good Job

I really liked your podcast. I liked the arrangment. I knew 80s music had influenced pop music today, but I didn't realize it did to this extent! I liked how you played an 80s song and then followed it with the recent song that had similar characteristics.

Interesting

I really like this! I always knew that some of these songs came from earlier decades but I like how you described the kinds of music (synth pop, new wave) that was copied and how you included both the 80s version and the current version of songs so that the listener can compare. One suggestion I have is that your first incorporation of music seems kind of quiet and I cannot quite the rhythm of it.

Also, this seems relevant to the remix manifesto we just watched. Copying these 80s songs to make new ones seems creative to me, but by the standards shown in Manifesto it seems like the songs would be considered as stolen.
