  I think the Grandfather was a more emotional character grasping at straws. The woman he loved died in the Dresden bombings so he married her sister. Even the grandmother says she lives her life in spaces and could not write the life story. In reality the truth hurts and all of the characters seem to have bottled up pain and sadness.
