Neil Armstrong - One Giant Leap for Mankind Playlist

A Reminiscence of Rome Inspired by Poe's "The Coliseum"

This great poem by Edgar Allan Poe not only reminds me of my fantastic trip to Rome this summer, but also embodies many of the literary techniques Poe is renowned for such as alliteration, parallelism, and metaphor, all of which contribute to its lyrical, yet musical quality. As the poet suggest, although the radiant marble paneling of its monuments has expired, Rome’s rich history of “grandeur, gloom, and glory!“ lives on.

The Coliseum.
by Edgar Allan Poe

Type of the antique Rome! Rich reliquary
Of lofty contemplation left to Time
By buried centuries of pomp and power!
At length - at length - after so many days
Of weary pilgrimage and burning thirst,
(Thirst for the springs of lore that in thee lie,)
I kneel, an altered and an humble man,
Amid thy shadows, and so drink within
My very soul thy grandeur, gloom, and glory!

Vastness! and Age! and Memories of Eld!
Silence! and Desolation! and dim Night!
I feel ye now - I feel ye in your strength -

Playlist Reflection

The Playlist Assignment was a Blast (no pun intended)!

Creating the Neil Armstrong - One Giant Leap for Mankind Playlist was incredibly fun while at the same time scholarly. I really enjoyed searching for songs, finding videos, and selecting parts of the lyrics all of which contributed to my goal for the playlist, to transmit through music the physical and emotional experiences that Neil encountered up to and during the Apollo 11 mission.
