Thomas, I like the opening
Thomas, I like the opening song but am having trouble with the volume levels. The Context point is good and the film placement idea works well. It’s just hard to make out the nuances of what you might be saying. I also wonder about moving away to somehow get at what the song is about might be a good strategy. My feeling is that it may be tough to do much beyond play the music if the focus of the discussion is on how it doesn’t fit. You could do more with splitting up the song to focus on what it is about—which you hint at and which might be a good strategy. Another option might be to bring in clips from the films to have some counterpoint audio. I also wonder if the goodfellas example is different than the first two—rather than just being out of context, here it seems to be using a strategy of juxtaposition to make a point. The stand by me clip plays a bit too long—again I’m wondering about the specifics of the songs and what segments might be targeted to your discussion. I’m also thinking the connection between that song and the film is perhaps more clear. I’m wondering about the number of songs too. I wonder if fewer songs discussed in more detail might help with pulling on the threads of when something is a total clash, when it uses juxtaposition, and when it actually lines up for whatever reason. Again, the Eye of the Tiger plays a bit long. This song was written for the film so there is a difference there as well. Overall, I think zooming out and starting with three or four songs that each have a unique relationship to their film and then the points you want to make in terms of those is the best place to start with revisions. Since the audio is a bit rough, you’ll probably be reworking things a bit, so starting with this conceptual refining will be good. The closing point does spell out your approach, but I’m not sure the memory angle has been pulled through—the personal connection isn’t focused on in the earlier discussions, so maybe either make that the focus or go with the three or so types of relationships songs might have with films and let that drive it.
