Response to the Teague report

There’s been a good deal of talk about the best way to save English studies. I feel, however, that we need just as much to ensure that the program remains robust and viable.

Midterm Portfolio in the Correct Place

Midterm Portfolio

Final Portfolio

Here are the instructions for completing all of the work in the class and submitting it in your final portfolio. Let me start by stressing that the portfolio is the document I will use to review all of your work in the class. It should represent as much as possible the effort, learning, growth, and engagement you have had with the course materials and questions.

Logistically, follow these steps:

  • Go to the Create Content link and select Portfolio. Open the posting that you made for your midterm portfolio and copy the materials, then paste them into the Portfolio posting. You will now be ready to revise/develop the final portfolio.
  • Make links to all of the drafts and revisions for all of your projects. (Your video might not have a revision.)
  • Make links to any blog postings or comments you have made.
  • Compose reflections for each of the projects.
  • Compose a cover letter reflecting on your work and the course as a whole.
  • Polish the composition, making sure everything works and that it reads well.

Midterm Portfolio - Alex

Greetings,

When I signed up for English 366, “Literature and the Other Arts,” my understanding of what the class might be like was based on a pretty literal interpretation of the course name. I don’t really remember reading the course description, but I assumed we would be looking at paintings and listening to music, in addition to reading different works of literature, perhaps thinking about how these forms of art are alike and different in the ways they create meaning. And the funniest part about it is, I thought that a class like that would be interesting because it would be a big departure from what I’m used to – like, not just writing essays/papers about literature, but essays and papers about literature and paintings and music. Pretty radical change, right? So exciting! Haha – I had no idea what was actually in store for me. I mean talk about complete departure – playlists; podcasts; collages – this course has almost been paperless! And this is an English class!

Anyway, I think you understand that I was, surprised.

Playlist

The Playlist assignment was a very interesting and fun experience. However I just realized that my Playlist is no longer uploaded correctly like it was before and instead of having all the content it only has one video. Finally, I redid the playlist and here it is. It was an interesting process because it was very difficult to find songs that I think aptly described the character of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I also am really confused about why almost all of my content got erased but apparently I did something wrong. I am happy with this playlist but I will still continue to work on it through the semester.

Podcast

The podcast was the biggest challenge for me. I had a little trouble with the recording and also on the time length. I am going to completely redo the podcast, and even change the artist. I did enjoy working with Audacity and even have used it for other projects. I also liked the creativity the the podcast allows for.

My perspective from this point in the semester:

MidTerm Portfolio

Amis,

Here we are! Almost done with another year and I can honestly say as an English major and student I have grown immensely! Coincidentally,a large part of that growth I can attribute to this class. If you had told me freshmen year that I would be creating podcasts or collages for an English class I would have not believed it. But here we are, relating technology and art to literary aspects and its been a gratifying experience. English was always my favorite subject in high school; yet, when I got to college, my beloved past time of reading became seriously dampened and overburdened with the work load and course material. However, this class has renewed my love for English and also awakened my creative abilities. Here are a couple examples of my what we have done this semester:

(Please note all of these are still in the process of being finished)

Literary Playlist: http://www.teachmix.com/litflow/node/10
I chose to do my playlist on my favorite movie character,Penny Lane. I attempted to personify Penny from my perspective through my song choices but I feel she is hard character to peg. I'm hoping with a little more work I can complete the playlist to do Penny justice!

Midterm Portfolio

Dear Reader,
When I first signed up for “Literature and the Other Arts,” I assumed that the course would include something along the lines of doing analyses of movies, paintings, songs, and other mediums people use to convey ideas and emotions. I pictured the work in the class being very similar to other English classes, such as writing the typical 4-5 page essay, but instead of writing on poems, plays, and novels, I would be writing on these other forms of Art. I had no idea I would be challenged to produce my analyses not through written words, but by actively and directly working with these mediums. Creating a playlist to represent a character, recording a podcast on one of my favorite bands, and creating my own collage not only allowed me to exercise my analytical skills on different forms of art, but the in-depth experience allowed me to gain a better understanding of each of these art forms work in their own right. Below is an account of each of my projects thus far, including what I have learned from each project and how I plan to use this knowledge to revise them.
