Twitter Proposal

Spell out your plans for the creation of your Twitter Video. Begin by looking over the parameters of the video assignment. Also, think about the research you have done related to your topic. Then, come up with a proposal for the video you intend to make. Your proposal should:

  • Point toward the genre and type of video you hope to create. Discuss the rhetorical goals you have; are you trying to persuade, entertain, argue, inform--some combination. Write a few sentences detailing the larger aims and shape of the project.
  • Discuss any examples that might serve as models for your video. This may be tricky as their are not too many videos out there doing what we are trying to do. If you have to find items that are similar, but not exact models, you can explain how your intended video will relate to these. Add a pointer with the URL(s) of any items you reference.
  • Identify any major research points you have uncovered and how they might make their way into the video. Even if you are creating an entertainment piece, you can spell out how yout thinking/exploration of the topic will inform what you put together. If there are major research sources you will rely on, you can list them as well.
  • Sketch out any materials you hope to use. You may not have all of them sorted out for this proposal, but try to give an idea of the types of items you will "film" for the video--live tweets, archives of tweets, excerpts from articles, scenes from videos, recorded typing, etc.
  • Spell out any particular concerns you have as you move forward.

All of this will likely take a page or so. You can compose your proposal in a word processor document, or you can compose it on our Web site. When you are finished, using the site and the add content option, select Twitter Video Proposal. Upload your proposal to the site before class on June 26th.

My Twitter video will be on the topic of dangers of social media misuse and the social and/or work-related consequences that it brings.  As capturing the attention of the audience is an important task when relaying information, the video will serve to entertain and inform on the topic.  Hopefully this can serve as a cautionary tale that will prevent any viewers from repeating the mistakes outlined.

In the news we occasionally see public figures posting unflattering and often offensive comments on Twitter, but the offending Tweets tend to be quickly deleted, so most likely the Tweet archive will come in the form of screenshots that saved the offending Tweets to highlight them.  Video will also be used to highlight how social media faux pas can lead to public shaming on the news.

There are various news articles as well as video clips that highlight particularly notable cases of social media gone wrong causing a stir as well as lost jobs, so collecting and slicing them into the Twitter video will be an important fixture.

Unfortunately, I have not been able to yet locate a video that could be used as inspiration so I am thus unable to provide a source to one.  Of importance to me will be editing the video to create smooth transitions so the viewer does not lose interest.

For my twitter video, I decided to inform and entertain viewers about DIY home decor and how DIY videos and websites can impact the lives of the people who use them. In the video, I plan to use tweets, pictures, and some of the DIY websites that I have found to possibly get the audience interested in DIY and to even go out and actually do it themselves.

For this assignment, I will use the Slow Combers, a tweet video, that we watched in class, as a model for my video. A lot of the pictures will come from my own DIY home decor that I have done and from websites that I frequently visit when looking for ideas. There is one article I found that talks a little bit about when DIY became popular and I do plan on using that as background information most likely before I give examples of the DIY projects many people including myself have completed.

I am thinking of having a few videos playing at once like in a square on the screen and have live tweets in the center of the videos. And at the end, I will probably show some finished DIY projects and the in-store item they replicate as well as the prices of both.

http://www.nbm.org/exhibitions-collections/exhibitions/diy.html

Some major points from this article are that DIY most likely started with the baby boomers in the 50's and 60's and I will also discuss why and how it became as popular as it is today.

A huge concern of mine is that it may be too short or it may be composed of mostly pictures and not enough information.

I want my video about Sherlock fandom, its intersection with real life and the fandom’s interaction with mainstream media related to Sherlock to be an informative and entertaining video.  I hope to present the wide variety of ways Sherlock fans express themselves online and the ways they interact with each other and the works they appreciate (movies, books, etc) both on and offline.  Through this exploration I want to show that the Sherlock fandom is one which, while divided, crosses boundaries on the internet and in real life.  I also want to show how the mainstream media’s interpretations of Sherlock is divided which allows for fans greater ability to interpret Sherlock as they choose creating an active online community more so than other fandoms which are not as open ended.

I take my inspiration for tone of video partially from the Hamlet video shown in class.  Ideally, I want to incorporate tweets about Sherlock from both fans and actors involved in producing Sherlock and relate these tweets to youtube videos and other areas of the internet.

Because the Sherlock fandom is so old, starting with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes books first published in 1887 and because it has had so many reiterations and reinterpretations through the years it’s fanbase comes from a wide variety of people.  There’s the newer generation consisting of fangirls (Cumberbitches) largely brought into existence by the BBC’s modern interpretation of Sherlock.  The BakerStBabes and Cumbercollective are also part of this new generation of the fandom but are a bit less intense.  Then there is the old guard made up of physical groups that met in person like The Baker Street Irregulars and The Adventuresses of Sherlock Holmes which have also made headway into the realm of the internet notably by having online journals such as the Baker Street Journal.

I will film tweets of some of these various groups with a focus upon ones that show a connection to the world outside the internet (such as in the creation of a convention) and links to interviews with the actors in these Sherlock interpretations.  I also want to focus upon some of the original fanwork that is created by the Sherlock fandom itself mostly focusing upon parodies and reviews/critiques.  Some of which reference other areas of the internet (ex. A Youtube video that references tumblr or twitter)

I am primarily concerned with being able to bring together all these materials into video form.  While this information is on the internet I don’t have a lot of experience in this type of narration.  Outside of that my main concern will be in whether or not I am adequately portraying the different factions while maintaining their continuity as part of the Sherlock fandom. Showing interaction between the fans and the actors/producers of the mainstream work may also be problematic but I have some sources in mind to do this so I think their communication (if not their agreement) between fans and producers should be achievable.

For my twitter video, I intend to discuss social media and its growing role in business and marketing. I would say that this video is going to be mainly educational with a purpose of distributing stats and analytics about how proper social media usage can boost your business. In Fall 2012, I ran social media for  start up company called Jacks and Jokers, and I have the analytics of people who have visited the site, how long they stayed, what percentage made buys, etc. I plan to use this in my twitter video to demonstrate how proper usage of social media in marketing is not just tweeting and posting pictures.

I do think, however, that my video will have some sort of persuasive component as well. I believe that social media is of the utmost importance in portraying yourself, as it is just a virtual representation of who you are and what you have to say. Twitter in particular, but also Instagram and Facebook, have a noticeable impact on the light through which friends, family, and future employers see you.  I plan to explore an app upon which I recently stumbled, called Buffer, that allows you to schedule a post to go public at the optimal viewing time, meaning at a time when most of your followers/friends are viewing your page or are most likely to interact with your post.

One app that has also recently caught my attention is Klout. Klout is useful in that it allows you to see how influential your posts are amongst your followers and friends, as well as how likely you are to engage them in your posts. This may be more useful for business, but I plan to teach certain things you can do to engage your followers – what is called “proper” usage of social media.

Obviously I will have to film myself tweeting, as well as posting from Instagram and various other social media platforms. Other than my analytics from working, I do not have any major research references at the moment, but I intend on using various sources throughout the course of this project. My Twitter Video will be an informative and entertaining video about music outreach. It is designed to inform people about how some new technological and creative ways of making music are being brought to poor, undeveloped areas of the world. It will also include ways that people are getting involved locally to teach music to underprivileged children. These outreach efforts to support music activities provide enjoyment of music, as well as teaching lifelong skills, such as commitment, discipline, and self-esteem.

An example of a video that will serve as a model is from the class website. The title is “Slow Combers, A Tweet Poem,”  https://vimeo.com/36649332.

Areas researched that give information on this topic include:

The PBS documentary on the UNC Beat Making Lab http://www.beatmakinglab.com/

The Paraguay Landfill Harmonic Orchestra http://www.motherjones.com/media/2013/05/landfill-harmonic-trash-orchestra-documentary

UNC Musical Empowerment

http://www.musical-empowerment.org/

Materials to be used in this video are scenes from The Democratic Republic of Congo Introduction video and The Democratic Republic of Congo ChoChoCho video, scenes from the UNC Music Empowerment video, photos from the Landfill Harmonic in Paraguay, articles and headlines in the news, iTunes music, and recorded typing.

My concerns are that I am able to find the right scenes from videos to support my points and be able to use the technology correctly to coordinate these scenes with the text and make them part of my Twitter Video.

My twitter video is going to be an exploration of privacy issues and the internet. I would like to have a combination of entetaining the viewer in addition to bringing to light some current controversial issues like the NSA leaks and the hunt for Edward Snowden.

I'm interested in how the Twitter Community has reacted to the NSA Controversary and the manhunt for Edward Snowden.

Have users changed their activity based on these events? Are they angry? Has Twitter reacted or even changed at all?

I possibly might expand this to include other privacy concerns but because it is such a broad issue I chose these topics in order to have some specificity and cohesion to my thought process.

I don't want this piece to solely be informative, I would like to somehow represent these concepts and current events in an artistic and creative manner.

As far as examples go for what I would use for this video, there are not many that relate specficially to what I am doing.

Here are some news articles that I found interesting in the beginning stages of my research.

http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/06/25/19135685-hunt-for-snowden-ups...

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/26/world/snowden.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/world/2013/06/25/snowden-extradition/...

In regards to materials I might use for this video I am interested in live tweets, and particularly archived tweets relative to Snowden.

As far as concerns I might have, I am a little worried that my video might be difficult to follow but since I am trying to focuso on only a few things I think that this is something I will be able to counteract.

Twitter possesses a rapidly expanding archive of searchable tweets, many of which can be used to analyze cultural trends and shifts over a period of time in a virtual setting.  For example, researchers at Humboldt State University have used Twitter to record the number of outgoing tweets containing homophobic slurs and normalized these data to the county level via use of geotagged tweets.  Geotagged tweets contain geographic coordinates within the archive, and are very useful for extracting the spatial distribution of these cultural trends.  Maps that can be produced from these methods range from color-coded area maps, to simple landmark maps that record a few positions, to complicated “heat maps” such as those used by researchers at HSU.

There exists an opportunity for research in this avenue, particularly research that makes use of geotagged tweets to observe the spatial trends of internet culture and communication.  Thorough analysis of the “hashtag” features of these tweets would be the main objective of this research study, in addition to exploring the most effective cataloguing method to make use of said hashtags.  The best way to observe these phenomena in a spatial sense would involve the use of geographic information systems, particularly ArcGIS.  ArcGIS is a computer program that can perform geographic calculations on spatial information; this includes the construction of maps, databases, etc.

My area of interest for this Twitter video would be the idea of UNC-Chapel Hill as a “global research university”, a phrase that I have heard very often on this campus.  The fact that UNC’s sphere of influence is global can be discerned from the sheer amount of research and collaboration that occurs between Carolina academics all over the world; however, does this notion hold true over the internet and Twitter as well?  Is there an opportunity to analyze the content of UNC’s “global” presence on twitter; that is, whether UNC is more global in the sense of being recognized as a research university or in another less academic way that may place more emphasis on athletic programs?  The analysis of these trends may prove useful in discovering the ways that people feel about UNC across the world, and whether these sentiments hold true across geographic areas such as countries and continents.  For example, it would be very interesting to quantify and compare the number of Tweets lauding the research at UNC from both China and France.  These quantified tweets may also be analyzed by content and type of research; however, I feel they may be too difficult to sift through using the Twitter archive app except to determine if it’s research related, or not.

I could start out by asking, what is terrorism?  A brief search of #terrorism lead me to think about showing images of possible terrorism and just simply ask is this terrorism or defending against terrorism and show two different pictures and ask the same thing.  One similar example could be,  https://twitter.com/SajaTraoui/status/349680399103979520/photo/1, which has the associated tweet, LOL America is too funny.  I don’t know how easy it would be to get replies, but I would like to post just two pictures and ask is this terrorism or defense against terrorism and see what kind of responses I receive.   Also, I would hash tag different types of communities to capture the difference in responses.  This would just be to get an idea of how people that use social media respond to my question.  So, this part of the video would be capturing tweets on twitter.

On privacy and the issue of shutting terrorist organizations out of twitter, it could be possible to compare and contrast democracy and the first amendment to allowing these people in other countries to use twitter or not.  Because on one hand we say it promotes democracy, but on the other hand we are saying it promotes terrorism, which I am not saying is false, but just an interesting dynamic worth making a video about.  There are some opportunities to use comedy to represent how our government attempts to deal with this idea of terrorism on social media, but I consider the overarching issue to serious to use comedy, so I will keep the video as formal as I can, however I can not control how others (on twitter) will respond in certain situations.  My video will mostly be informative, somewhat inquisitive, and a little analytical. I also plan on attempting to use the google spreadsheet to see how many tweets are associated to terrorism in certain timeframes surrounding a terrorist events.

Here is an example of question and response related to freedom of speech and national security:  http://goo.gl/MCSRU

I think if I could find a way to speed up the video to capture me typing the question and then the responses that would be informative and interesting.

The following are articles I have found thus far relating to terrorism and twitter:

Twitter could it take over your life?

In my video I hope to propose that twitter and other social media like it could one day become our only source of knowledge, humor, sports, news, and communication. I will show how twitter already gives people information like the information above. I will show the consequences of twitter being peoples only information source as well. I will persuade people to become less dependent on information sources that may be unreliable.

What I am trying to do is like Al Gore’s an Inconvenient Truth. I want to show the effects and propose to our society is it a good thing? Do we want to do as Albert Einstein has feared and let technology become what our knowledge is dependent on? I will point toward the fact that you can receive any information you want on twitter. Then I will point toward whether you can trust it or not. I will show the social stigma of our current society. I will then show how it could turn our culture toward destruction or toward a better future. The outcome will depend on what people do in the future. I will persuade towards the better future.

Research I intend to use to persuade my audience is things like this

culturedapop.wordpress.com/2013/03/01/is-twitter-taking-over-our-lives/

http://www.phillymag.com/articles/facebook-twitter-social-media/

http://libertyaboveall.wordpress.com/2013/01/10/social-media-is-taking-over-the-world-but-should-it-take-over-our-lives/

I intend to use screen captures of twitter culture and accounts as they update over a time lapse. I plan to use some humor references and good music to keep attention of my audience. Camtasia will be used in order to make the video.

My concerns from here on out is will my persuasion be good enough? Will I be able to make my video lon enough? And since everything in pop culture is fast now will anyone even care?

I'd like to do my video on how we relate to and interact with people on twitter and how that reflects who we are. In today's world, not only are we able to communicate with our friends from all over the world in just seconds, with tools like twitter we can see what strangers or celebraties are up to. I see this as a parody or an entertainment piece where the main character's (probably @chapelchillel) tweets at  friends and celebraties and retweets collide to paint a bigger picture of who the main character is.

I draw inspiration from that Hamlet twitter video from class. I also am influenced by the Google Search Stories videos found at http://www.youtube.com/user/SearchStories and the Outlook.com commercials featuring the song "Can't Hold Us" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis. I believe these videos show how one can tell a story using screen capture.

To help tell the main character's story I plan on using tweets that include pictures, short videos from sites like vine, retweets of topics of interest, and links to sites of interest. I have not yet decided on the music or video accompanying the video.

Hillel

I plan on using Twitter more as a subject than a medium. My video will be a short 3D animation set in an abstract representation of Twitter. The screen capture footage will be projected onto 3D objects as textures. My main inspiration is Fatima al Qadiri's music video for her song Vatican Vibes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKosaf5tmpI). My video will attempt to capture a similar maximalist/hypermodern aesthetic.

My challenge will be to transcend the purely aesthetic aspects of the video and attempt to make a broader point about Twitter as a whole. My main concern is with Twitter as a virtual environment in which we live, how it differs from the real world, and how those differences structure our communication. I will consider the factors that give Twitter the feeling of an environment vs. a simple one-to-one communication tool like a telephone. The video will center around a small, conscious object, probably representative of a Twitter user, travelling through the 3D Twitter environment. The object will probably not interact with the environment around it, as any kind of complex animation will require more time than is available. It will remain a passive observer, but an observer that is very much within the environment rather than outside it.

Twitter Proposal AppIcons, Instagrams and Photo Editing

My twitter proposal will reveal research on the effects of image editing and photo editing as a social media integration used in videos, ISO’s, app icons, memes, and text and twitter messages.  Photo editing is staging a comeback with a few hashtags on the horizon and new communities are forming daily due to the communication interest in the 21 century.  I did not find much material on image editing but photo editing has more material. I will use my video as an advertisement to show how photo edits, image memes, instagrams and application icons are cutting edge in the social media communication communities.

Editing images is more complicated than just photo memes and does require graphic skill knowledge and will not become watered down due to instagrams. Earlier logo usage from Anheuser Busch, Coca Cola, CNN, and grocery store chains thrived on logos as the symbol status to market products. Now app icons are the future force in advertisement and highly visible

on Ipads, mobile phones, internet websites, etc. Research capabilities are highly technological and advanced with graphics, memes, as businesses move away from logos since late 1978 and trending now are app icons. Most communication about photo editing is to share information.

My argument is how photo editing represents a brand of identity, where as a basic simplified identity of an image is not graphic quality photo editing. The current marketing trends are iconic in nature. The 21st century requires less paper and instant “Instagrams” type technology. App Icons are downloaded on mobile phones, in text messages pictures are sent and App Stores as a social media are with Apple, Amazon, Gameloft, Google,to name a few. There are free apps, apps you can pay for and this quick and instant photo editing allows global capabilities in minutes. The current trends have gravitated away from image editing. Most of the hash tags show information and communication of how to perform clipping path and color applications. There is not a lot of communication on the image editing or photo editing interest to hashtag. Quality photo editing is required. You will not get away from the trained professional graphic artist. The skill is necessary to create and compete in this globally iconic app market.

Please review my articles listed below regarding photo editing and app icons.
