PSA/Tutorial: The changing employment landscape and picking a major

The combined power of rising college costs and a stubbornly high unemployment/underemployment rates have made what used to be a no brainer, of going to college no matter what area of studies into a tough decision for many young adults.

For all age groups the unemployment/underemployment rates are sitting well above their natural rates. The rates are even more alarming when looking at recent graduates. As my classmates and I invest time and money into obtaining a college degree, it is important to think about what one wants in return. Its clearly easier said than done and often times a combination of things. These could possibly be a more worldly view, or to gain knowledge in a field of passion, to see new places, or to meet new people amongst many others. However, If the number one goal is to get a job, choosing one’s major has never been so important as it is today.

Comments

This is such an excellent and relevant PSA. Particularly as we all move closer to graduation this is something that is unconsciously on everyone's mind.

Great Job!

I like the way the audio opens up the piece. And the fade in to the speaker is nice. I had some issues with the volume levels. For the text that comes on screen, I'm wondering if trimming or paraphrasing to give the viewer less to read makes sense. It might be that callouts with less text that make the same points could punch things up a bit. I feel like I need more context for the charts that come up around 1:00. Are these unemployment rates? I'm also wondering about the narration of the speakers in terms of the message of the piece as a whole the visuals are making me feel the argument is about economics and choosing a utilitarian major, but a lot of the narration seems to be working along the lines of choosing what you love. I'm just thinking a bit more textual guidance along the way might help sort out these perspectives. I had trouble processing the long block of text toward the end. The end is a bit abrupt. Nice work.
