Writing in the 1890s has a certain taste, a flavor. Some of the works are said to show the underside of American culture. Often described with the terms Naturalism or Realism, stories and novels focus vivid detail on unfamilair often disturbing subjects. The heading for this unit of the course is

America Shown Real.

Be sure to post your thoughts about this unit or others in our class message forum. So far... Working with Nick Evans' E316K class, we have built a Yellow Wallpaper Site, dealing with the story by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. See online texts, discussions, and commentary and student projects dealing with a film version of the story.

We also have developed a Mcteague Site, dealing with the novel written by Frank Norris. See the online text, student html projects and transcripts of discussions
