1. Setting up an E-mail account:
Open the Net folder
Double click on the Telnet icon
Open the File menu and select Open Connection
In the host window of the dialog box that appears type mail.utexas.edu and
press the Return key, or click OK.
Wait until the machine connects, then respond to the prompts for social security number,
last name, first name, and birthday. (Note: use the tab key to move the cursor from
line to line, place flashing cursor in appropriate lines to confirm information or
move to the next screen).
Next enter a password. Re-enter the password to double-check it.
Next enter a mailbox name. The mailbox is a kind of folder where your messages will
be stored, and the mailbox name will appear before the @ symbol in your E-mail address.
If you name your mailbox David-Byrne then your E-mail address will be
David_Byrne@mail.utexas.edu.
When you have entered all the information, Exit the program. You now have an E-mail address.
2. Copying Eudora to Diskette: Before beginning, students should have a properly formatted diskette reserved for Eudora.
Insert the formatted diskette into the drive slot.
Double click on the CWRL_Mac icon.
Double click on the Internt folder.
Double click on the Eudora folder.
Double click on the Startup Mail Folder
Click once on the Eudora Settings icon and drag it to the diskette icon.
The settings file should be copied to the diskete.Close all open windows.
Double click on the diskette icon.
Double click on the Eudora Settings icon.
Eudora will create mailboxes on the diskette, and open for configuration and use.
3. Using Eudora:
Open the Eudora diskette.
Double click on the Eudora Settings icon.
If this is the first time students have used Eudora, they will have to configure their personal information.
Changes in configurations will be saved to the diskettes, so this configuration process should only need to be done once.
Configuring Eudora:
Open the Special menu and choose Configuration.
You can see a picture of a sample eudora configuration window.
In the POP Server Account window enter your full E-mail account, for example David_Byrne@mail.utexas.edu.
Do not capitalize any of the characters in the machine name.
In the Real Name window enter your name.
In the SMPT Server window enter mail.utexas.edu.
In the Return Address window enter your E-Mail address, for example David_Byrne@mail.utexas.edu.
In the PH Server window enter X500.
The rest of the windows can be left as is, or configured to taste.
Once the information has been configured correctly, press Return or click on OK.
You are now ready to send and receive mail.
Sending a Message:
To compose a message, open the Message menu and select New Message.
Fill in the address of the recipient.
Enter a subject.
To forward a copy to someone, enter his/her address after the CC:
Compose a message in the message window.
Click the Send button to send the message.
Reading Messages: Open the File menu and select Check Mail.
Enter your password.
Messages will be transferred to the screen.
Double click on messages to read them.
Problems: If students have trouble sending or receiving mail, check that passwords are entered correctly; check the caps lock key.
If there is still a problem, Telnet to mail.utexas.edu (See above) and re-check mail information, especially mailbox name and password.
