A Movie Offering a Solution For a Societal Problem

By Kent Park

What is a good movie? The answer to this question depends on what type of movie you are talking about. For example, you couldn't really say Dances With Wolves by Kevin Costner is better then JFK also by Kevin Costner. They are two different TYPES of movies. You can't really compare the two just like you can't compare apples and oranges. They each have their own criteria of making it a successful movie. One type of movie is a movie that "offers a solution to a societal problem." A movie that falls under this category is The Accused. Three important criteria that would fall under this category are: The movie reveals the underlying problem. The movie is believable to the audience as an event that could or has happened by it's accuracy to the real event The movie appeals to the audiences' emotion. The three criteria can be used to measure how good a movie is compared to another movie which falls into the same category. The Accused is little unclear about defining the underlying problem, but that is overshadowed by its realistic view, superior acting and its appeal to the audiences' emotion. The overall effect of the movie is very powerful and will definitely give the audience something to think about.
