Using Deja News

Deja News searches exclusively through newsgroup articles. Currently it has well over a million articles from thousands of newsgroups which date from a year ago to yesterday. Its location is www.dejanews.com.

Keywords

Like the other search engines discussed, Deja News works off of keywords. And just like the previous engines, you can use one or several keywords. To find individual articles, you must use the upper query box (see above screen shot). When using more than one keyword, you can either search for articles that have both keywords in them or articles that have one or the other. To search for articles with both keywords, can either just type in both words, separated only by spaces. Or, you can put AND in-between them. Just remember to capitalize all the letters of AND. To search for articles that have one keyword or the other, you insert an OR in the place of the AND.

Group Searches

The lower query box (see above screen shot) is used to find entire newsgroups that are dedicated to the topics you are looking for. You use this additional query box the same way as the upper one, with the same syntax applying. Deja News will return a listing of newsgroups which have a high percentage of your keywords in its articles. The groups will be listed in order percentage of articles that contain your keywords. Usually, the first few are more or less guaranteed to be what you are looking for.
