Our first assignment is an arguable claim paper. We will focus on the methodologies of the Toulmin system to construct an argument which takes a stand on an issue of importance to our culture and community.

Rough draft due Monday, Sept 19.
Final draft due Monday, Sept 26.
3-4 pages typed double spaced.

Choose an issue of importance to this class. Your task is to write a convincing argument taking a position on the issue. Use the because clause and Toulmin exercises to strengthen the components of your argument. Make sure to give solid reasons for your position and discuss any underlying assumptions that your argument relies on. Use evidence to support both your reasons and assumptions. Also, devote a significant part of your paper to addressing the opposition. treat them fairly and with examples, before responding to them. You should also include citations from other writers concerning the issue; these citations can come from articles you've found, or in the back of Writing Arguments, or from InterNet newsgroup sources.

So, the requirements are:

A position argument giving reasons and detailing assumptions which support your stance.
The use of evidence to support those reasons and assumptions.
A section detailing and responding to the opposition.
And quotations to illuminate and support.
