BBS's
stand for Bulletin Board System. Local BBS's are privately owned computer
systems that are run as a hobby by people of all different backgrounds. Most of
these BBS's are run by kids ranging in age from 10-18. There are literally
thousands of BBS's around the country. Cities such as Houston, Los Angeles,
Chicago, or New York have up to eight hundred BBS's running in their area code
(Compute Issue 156). There are some large commercial bulletin board systems such
as Prodigy, CompuServe, or America Online that people can access for a monthly
charge, but the majority of the bulletin board systems are privately owned
computer systems which must be accessed by a modem. BBS's are hangout place
where people of all different background come together to share their ideas and
their opinion. It's a place where anyone can be anyone. It's almost like being
reborn. No one knows who you are and they don't have any expectations of you.
You start fresh in an imaginary place with limitless possibilities.
