Highlighting Internet media, culture and writing
A computers and writing class site

Media like the web offer us new ways to present information. There is more interactivity in a web page than in a magazine, or a newspaper. And yet readers sometimes pass over information on the web, avoiding long pages of text in favor of sounds or images. This site examines issues related to various Internet media, including Newsgroups, MUDS, and the web.

Forums like Newsgroups provide a kind of text produced by multiple authors; the threads of an online conversations bring an unparalleled diversity of views together. But participants of newsgroups offend each other. Flames, netiquette, authors and interactions construct a complex Internet culture.

Writing for the net should consider these new media and the specifics of online culture. It should blend the tendencies of online media with composition strategies like considering audience, and examining assumptions and evidence.

This site extends a Computers and Writing class taught during the fall of 1995. Much of our class activity will take place on the web. If you are interested in participation at a distance or if you have a question, get in touch.

The class assignments and tasks are available to anyone interested and are mostly self-paced. Feel free to follow along or make use of our materials.
