Action and Suspense

Other effective features of Bladerunner is the intensity of its suspense as brought forth through its gripping action. Most of the scenes are quite violent due to the nature of the plot, that being both the motivation on the replicant's part to kill anyone who gets in the way of their survival as well as the need for bladerunners to kill unruly replicants in the attempts to preserve human life. Usually just before the killing, chase seens aid in building the suspense that ultimately leads to the fatal conclusion. The two stills below illustrate Deckard's pursuit of Zhora, one of the evil replicants which pose a threat to human civilization.

Chasing Zhora through the city streets...

In this image, the viewer is as obsessed with catching Zhora as is Deckard. In this shot, we recognize Deckard in the center, hurdling over all obstacles that contribute to the difficulty of his chase. The scenery around him gives the flavor of the hustle and bustle of a typical night in downtown Los Angeles. One might also mention the appearances of those who creep along the sidewalks, completely oblivious to the situation happening around them. Anyone who has spent any period of time in L.A. will identify with the disconcern of many of the city's inhabitants.

Taking Aim...

Now that Deckard has Zhora where he wants her, he extends his arm firmly, eyes concentrated directly on the subject, and is now about to shoot. His mouth and forehead are tightened as he is not about to let this one get away. There is a great deal of suspense contained within this single still, so much so that we expect to hear the gunshot ring at any moment. If this picture were presented in a 3-dimensional format, it might be too frightening to stare at for too long.
