Non-Traditional Music

The music in Bladerunner was written by Vangelis, a composer known for his electronic, new age works. The main reasons why the music works so well is precisely due to its harmonic simplicity and the electronic sound sources, two present musical trends which seem to point in the direction of the future. In fact, most science-fiction films utilize music of this sort. Listen to the audio and visual exerpts below to hear examples of Vangelis' compositional style.

Love Theme - This is the music heard during a scene involving Deckard and Rachael. Notice the smooth synthesized accompaniment underneath the saxophone's sensual melody. (sound source)

End Titles - Music indicative of a futuristic chase seen, the music is purely synthetic and extremely simplistic. (sound source)

Music Behind Roy Batty's Soliloquy - In this excerpt, you will have to listen carefully to the music underneath the dialogue, for its very soft in volume level. Vangelis demonstrates effective use of synthesizers to create a sense of sadness and serenity. (sound source)
