Protagonist:
John Deckard

An important factor in films of the sci-fi genre is that the audience have at least one character who they regard as a hero, exhibiting good and combatting evil. Representing the main character in Bladerunner, Harrison Ford portrays John Deckard, a brave and stoic ex-bladerunner, called back to duty to save the world from human extinction. Here he is seen with a furled brow and tightened lips, determined to find the clues that will lead him to his suspects. Although Deckard tries to maintain entirely emotionally detached from other subjects in the movie, the likeness of his character lies in the fact that his abilities weaken both when he falls in love with Rachael, a replicant and initial suspect, and when he becomes more acquainted with the life-threatening situation surrounding the remaining replicants. In a sense, Deckard goes through a metamorphosis from being a replicant opponent to a replicant sympathizer.
