Advanced Technology and Special Effects

If a science-fiction film is going to be successful, it should tell us something about the future, and what better way to convince an audience of a futuristic setting than by providing examples of advanced technology. Often the way to achieve these new gadgets and appliances is through the use of special effects. Below are examples of the technological innovation behind Bladerunner.

The "Hopeful" Esper Machine
This is Decker's Esper machine, a device particularly useful to policemen in searching for relevant evidence pertaining to the case at hand. As it displays photographs taken at the scene of a crime, the video component responds to certain vocal commands, such as "zoom in" and "enhance," all during a detective's attempt to find the most diminutive of clues crucial to solving the case. The device's label is especially suitable in that the Latin root "esper" translates into English as "hope."

Phone Call in Bar - Watch as Deckard utilizes this most innovative form of videophone with which he is able to see his correspondent, Rachael, as he is talking with her. This sort of invention will most definitely be appearing on the shelves of the world's electronics stores before long. (clip source)

Spectacular Spinner

This modern-age police vehicle is striking in its ablility to hover in the air, much like today's helicopter, except much easier to maneuver. As you can see, the red and blue colored lights were retained to familiarize the audience that this is indeed official property of the Los Angeles Police Department. Although the existence of the previous inventions above seem possible for the time period 2019, I find it hard to imagine witnessing Spinner technology in the next 20 years. Nevertheless, the vehicle adds further to the sheer fantasy of the movie.
