Futuristic Plot
A Modern-Day Frankenstein

Indeed, the story of Bladerunner takes place in the future, the year 2019 to be exact. And although the state of affairs in that futuristic community seems much more advanced than might actually occur less than 25 years from now, the story introduces certain issues which are plausible if present civilization is to continue on its present course. The plot suggests that if technology continues to progress to the point where machines can be built "more human than human," a memorable advertising slogan used in the film, so increases the threat of human extinction. Many of us are familiar with the adroid Data in the television series STAR TREK: The Next Generation. Basically he is a machine which runs on a computerized brain enabling a more advanced intelligence and greater memory capacity than any human could ever achieve. Yet, Data is unable to experience emotions and sensations. Such is not the case with the android "replicants" in Bladerunner, who, in their short lives were able to see, hear, smell, taste, and feel things that all humans could. Listen to experiences of the head replicant, Roy Batty, described specifically in Roy Batty's soliloquy (from Bladerunner Clips and Stills). It is their great zest for life that motivates replicants to struggle to hold on to it even longer. The plot is definitely a credible one, that the day will come when we have the capacity to create a monster.
