Camtasia Download and In-Class Typing

Use Camtasia to record an improvisational typing performance. Follow these steps:
Before beginning, download a copy of Camtasia. You will be using the 30 day free trial for this class.
You can also look at some examples (1) and (2) of  improv typing video.

  1. Decide what “venue” you want to use for your performance—a google search form, a word processor document, a sticky note, and e-mail message.
  2. Stage the venue so that the recording will have good legibility—large fonts, no squiggles, etc.
  3. Take a minute or two to outline what you want to type about—keep it sketchy, but have some broad idea of your topic
  4. Turn on the screen recorder and capture a minute or two of typing. (Reshoot as needed to get a good typing session with good legibility.)
  5. Add some music in Camtasia. Add any zooming or other effects.

When you have finished creating a quick improv typing film, follow these steps:

  1. Share/Export the file in mp4 format (You’ll need to learn the process of creating an mp4 from Camtasia.)
  2. If you don’t yet have an account on YouTube or Vimeo, create one. Log in to your account and upload your video. (You’ll need to get comfortable uploading videos to YouTube or Vimeo.)
  3. Once your video is uploaded, get the address of the video.
  4. Take a screenshot or download a thumbnail image for the video.
  5. Go to the class Web site and select the Add content link, then the Improv typing link.
  6. Give the video a title and paste the address of the video into the form, then hit save.
