Avila, Jim. "Online Love Triangle, Deception End in Murder - ABC News." ABCNews.com - Breaking News, Latest News & Top Video News - ABC News. N.p., n.d. Web. 19 July 2013. <http://abcnews.go.com/US/online-love-triangle-deception-end-murder/story....

This article is a news report on a love triangle between a 46 year-old man faking being a 20 year-old marine, his 22 year-old coworker, and an 18 year old girl. This article elaborates on how easy it is to get caught up being someone else and the consequences of being so caught up. He ends up murdering his 22 year old co-worker over the fake relationship he created. I plan to use this as an example of how these relationships start and how people become obsessive over them, enough to even kill.

This article is a survival guide for the internet and has tips/information on how to not get deceived on the internet. It goes into background checking, friend linking, and tips to discover the authenticity of people. This article I plan to use at the end of my video essay to show people can avoid this trap with simple techniques.

Mintz, Anne P.. Web of deception: misinformation on the Internet. Medford, N.J: CyberAge Books, 2002. Print.

This book is the first published book about internet fraud and deception people use on the internet for self-gain. The book goes into how there is no resource checker or editor for websites and information on the internet. It explains how easy it is to put false information out that confuses and deceives people. I plan to use this as how “catfishing” became possible and why it’s so easy to do to people now in today’s internet based society.

Peterson, Hayley. "'Catfishing:' The phenomenon of Internet scammers who fabricate online identities and entire social circles to trick people into romantic relationships | Mail Online." Home | Mail Online. N.p., n.d. Web. 19 July 2013. <http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2264053/Catfishing-The-phenomeno....

This article explains what “catfishing” is exactly while bringing in examples of it today. It explains about how people create fake avatars and even fake social groups in order to deceive people into love and caring about a false person. The whole article is an overall idea of my essay; it completely explains “catfishing”. I plan to use this article to explain “catfishing” In depth and the people who coined it.

Whitty, Monica T., and Adam N. Joinson. Truth, lies and trust on the Internet. London: Routledge, 2009. Print.

The book offers a balanced view of the internet as good and bad. It uses social science research to show that the internet is not all bad. It is an inanimate thing that is shaped by those who use it. The social research argues that anonymity is a major problem but also allows people to be themselves and fill their deepest desires. I plan to use this information to help strength my case while giving an opposite view of people doing the “catfishing”.
