Mashup Assignment

Compose a mashup in which you develop an interpretation of a film by creating a satirical trailer.

Mashups are developed by editing and rearranging scenes, and then adding music and voiceover to create a trailer or brief video. For this assignment, you will also need to develop a reading of the film so that you have an angle. Your mashup should deliver the same kinds of points that might come across in an argument about the meaning of the film/story, but it will likely do so with humor. (Although, it's possible to develop a serious trailer that expresses your interpretation.)

There are many samples of trailer mashups online.

Here are some more mashups from an earlier class.

We will go over the technical dimensions and talk more about how to envision these projects as we go forward.

Alternative Choice: Create a stop-motion video. Investigate the means for creating stop motion videos, and then put something together that expresses your creativity. here is an example: http://vimeo.com/8037937

To create the mashup you will need to do some manipulation of video. We will go over it in class, but you will want to get started by downloading some tools:

For the opening and closing of your mashup you can use an image editor to create graphics to frame the piece and weave the two films together. Here are some resources:

You can  use a free image editor or you may also prefer installing photoshop for a 30 day free trial.

And for these purposes you may be able to use an online image editor.

When finished, upload your mashup to YouTube or Vimeo, then add it to our class Web site with the Mashup option.
