Video Essay

Create a video that explores and analyzes an aspect of Internet culture. You might choose a topic related to your earlier Twitter research. Or you can identify another topic related to Internet culture. Here are some of the characteristics that will make the videos successful:

Informed by research. Although the video itself should not bog down in information, the topic and the project should have a strong research foundation. You will need to do library and online research. And you can consider doing further research with social media, tweets, etc. For this video, a list of sources should be included as credits.

Information rich. Consider the videos we discussed in class that make use of narration and visual text. Unlike the mashup or PSA, this video should be constructed with the aim of providing information and guidance about the topic to viewers. Also, focus on the strategies for successfully delivering information in video format--visuals (e.g., charts, graphs, etc.), narration, concise but informative statements.

Technically sophisticated. With three Camtasia projects under your belt, you should be able to deploy a range of screen presentation moves. The optimal strategy for your aims should be used--typing when appropriate, captured video, screen manipulation, callouts. You should also use animations to give this longer video a dynamic feel and flow--movements, fades, adjustments to opacities, arrangements of materials on the canvas, etc. Mechanical concerns like canvas size, legibility, audio levels, transitions, etc. should also be cleared up as you develop the piece.

This is a new assignment, but a few examples might give us something to think about.
