E 309M Computers and Writing

Project 2, Task 3

The second project calls for a rhetorical analysis of a MUD or newsgroup. In task two for this assigment we looked at some newsgroups. Today we will examine some MUDs. The goal for today is to get a feel for the kinds of environments that MUDs may create. If you wish you can perform an anlaysis of the environment. What about the structures in the MUDs helps convey a particular message? What is that message?

You may also want to analyze the characters who interact on a particular MUD. What can you say about the make-up of the MUD audience? What about that particular MUD appeals to that audience? How would you characterize the interactions that take place?

If you have access to a MUD client, use it to enter the addresses of the MUDs below.

Using a Macintosh at the CWRL, you will open the internet folder and open MUDDweller. Go to the Configure menu and select TCP/IP address and enter one of the addresses of our MUDs for today. Next go to the Configure Menu and choose Open Connection, then log on. You can also connect directly to the MUDs from the links below, but the interface will be limited. The MUDS we will visit today are:

Fantasia 128.95.44.22 port 4201

DargonMUD tinylondon.ucsd.edu port 4201

Depending on the MUD you may connect as a guest or, if possible, create acharacter by typing "create [character name] [password]"

If you connect as a character be sure to describe yourself with "@desc me =[description of yourself]"

Spend the class exploring the two MUDs above. Finally, take the a few minutes and add your impressions of the MUDs and their audiences to our community message forum.
