E 309M Computers and Writing Project 1, Task 2In
order to begin working on the first project, you
will need to think about the design of your web pages. The first thing you will
want to consider is what information you want to present. If you want to talk
about those who favor censorship of the net and those who are opposed, then you
might have a site that begins with the opening or index page, and links to pages
for discussing each of the two positions.
You might introduce your project then talk about the Exon bill. You
might also deal with free speech, or consider a link to a page for discussing
relevant articles. Or perhaps to other useful sites.
The main thing is that you'll want to map out
mentally a structure for the project and write down the names of the pages that
you will use.
Next you'll want to make the necessary files.
These instructions are geared for a Macintosh with BBEdit Lite and
HTML extensions, but whatever editor you use to write html files, the aim is to
produce a folder or directory containing an opening page, index.html, and whatever
subpages you will use in the project.
- Open the applications folder and open BBEdit. Go to the Extensions menu and
choose Document. Enter a project title in the dialog box, then click OK
- Next, go to the bottom of the page and draw a line <hr> and make a return
link to your index page--go to Extensions and choose HTML Anchor; enter
"index.html"
- Next, put your name at the bottom of the page and highlight it then choose
HTML Anchor and enter "mailto:[your e-mail address]". Separate these lines by
using html style commands like paragraph break <p> or line break
<br>
- Now you will make copies of this file for every additional page you need.
First go to the File menu and choose Save as. Save into your folder a copy of the
file with one of the names for your additional pages (for example,
"constitution.html"). Finally, open any new pages, go to the top of the page and
change the title
You can now go back to your index page and make links to all of the pages you've
made. When finished, proofread the pages, making sure all the links work and
checking the titles and spelling. Let me know if you have questions.
