E 309M Computers and Writing

Project 1

The first major project is the construction of a web site related to either the "Cyberporn" controversy of issues of speech on the internet.

* You're invited to analyze the topics in terms of media--for example, thinking about media to explore the differences between censorship on TV, the telephone and the Internet.

* You could also evaluate the credibility of various Cyberporn texts in terms of their media--is a Usenet newsgroup message as authoritative as the Time article? Why or why not?

You can also think about culture to explore the topics.

* What is it about the online community that made it react so to the "Cyberporn" article?

* You might compare print culture with electronic culture. What are the perceptions of the internet held by the general public. How do they differ from "the reality"

These are just a couple of examples of ways to approach the topics. You can take alternate paths if you like. The requirements are

The project should provide connections to resources of interest. Ideally the resources would be evaluated n terms of their biases and their relevance to the projects. The project should also provide original analysis of the topic. Quoting useful information is fine.

Additionally, the project should consider some of the elements of web page design. Think of the opening page as the topic sentence of a traditional essay. You'll want to orient the reader to the structure of your project and provide clear explanations about the materials you provide.

This may seem like a lot but if you are presenting your information clearly, you shouldn't have a problem. You'll also want to consider elements of web style, which we'll discuss over the next few weeks. If you have any questions, let me know.

To complete the project, you should go through
